Jelly fish makes me wonder !

That is always the case. I really never got to understand this floating/swimming bodies. I want to share with you my collection of images I took in Atlanta Aquarium. All pictures are not edited. This is the real colour of the jelly with lighting effect from the aquarium.

Moulid EL Hussein- The festival for birth of Imam El Hussein.

Egyptian celebrate the birth of Imam Hussein. Men are in trance at this festival commemorating the birth of Imam Hussein in Cairo. Most of them are Sufi Muslim.

Men gather around the Monshid ( Reciter ) and start moving the upper part of the body in Different direction. The Mosnsid recites poems and Islamic songs.

Imam Hussein's head believed by some to be buried on the grounds of the mosque. Others believe it buried along with his body in the In karbala in Imam Hesayan Mosque in Iraq.

People gather form all over Egypt next to the mosque for a period ranging from three to four days. They sleep, eat, pray and perform their rituals inside the mosque.

Most of the Inshad ( recitation and singing) take place after El-Magreb prayer ( Prayer called during and after sunset). People start gathering from the surrounding streets to watch the rituals.

With the Head and body swinging, visitors start to get into a trance-like state.

Thursday Feburary 18th

I am still enjoying my working at ATO. Things did not change a lot since the last time I wrote.

Yesterday, I went to Kıslay (Ankara town center) where I started to walk around in the street wondering and trying to look for something interesting. I ended in a street full or tents made by protestors. They have been there for almost 2 month to protest the privatization of Turkey's tobacco company. This privatization will allow the new management to change the working conditions (salaries, benefits and status). What captured me the most is the atmosphere surrounding the tents. In every tents out find protestors either playing music, singing or even sometimes dancing in the street.

Internet

Yesterday, I was talking to my room mate about the use of the internet and I found out that the government blocks certain website like YouTube and some adult website. The interesting part ıs that you can ‘tunnel’ through by using a different website which can take you there. For example, you can you can view a video from YouTube by using a tunnel browser.

Hair dresser

I would like to include some random thought about some observations I have see during my stay in Ankara. So, the hair dresser exists more or less in every single street in Ankara. I don’t know why, but it is very obvious.

Women fashion

In comparison to Egypt, I have to say the Turkish woman has a better sense of fashion and style. There closet is far more creative, stylish, and more European in style. My opinion in this matter is that they are more liberal and more open to European ideas. Also, the textile industry is flourishing, which give them better quality products with a better price options.

On Saturday 20th I went to the old part of the Ankara. It is called Ulus . I went there with two photographers from Ankara I meet through a photography group on facebook. On the old part of the city there was a 2nd hand market for goods and Also a market for some Cheap clothing.

At the top of the old city hill, an old castle stood up. The castle oversees the whole city. Some kids were playing football inside of the castle surrounded by its walls. They pictures you will see below are taken around the area of the castle. I am trying as much as possible to capture a real glimpse of the Turkish old unknown areas.

My first week in Turkey!

The first couple of days in Turkey past very fast. I am currently trying to make a conscious effort to document my visit to the country using my camera and some notes I take.

My trip started by taking the plan on Friday the 12th from Cairo international airport to Istanbul airport. I arrived there at 6. I took the bus to taksim square (a very famous square in the middle of Istanbul) the bus took around 1 hour to reach taksim square. From there I took another small bus to the bus station. I stayed in the bus station for 3 hours till I got on the bus to Ankara. I got to Ankara around 6 am. The first night I slept at my friend house. The second day I moved to the apartment I am staying in for the first month.

I am staying with a Turkish student in his last year in University. His is studying Electrical engineering at Ankara University. I have my own room!

On Sunday the 14^th, I traveled with other interns who are staying in Ankara to city called “safranbolu”. The city is famous for its old houses and for the Turkish delicates, a kind of a sweet very popular in turkey. Most of the pictures you will find below are taken at on this trip.

My first working day was on Monday the 15^th. I am working at ATO or Ankara chamber of commerce. İ am doing training at Ankara chamber of commerce. The main aim of the internship is to facilitate the trade between Egypt and Ankara. I am working on doing a country profile for Egypt and trying to facilitate communication between both sides.

This pictures was taken in front of EL- Hussein Mosque in the 9th March 2009. This date matched with the celebration of the birth of Prophet Mohamed in Islamic calender.

Different people from different Islamic schools of thought and sects come every year and gather in front of EL-Hussein Mosque to celebrate the event of the birth of Prophet Mohamed. Every group of people starts chanting and walking from the square in front of the mosque till they reach mosque.

Egyptians celebrate this day it buying sweets that are made of walnuts, cocoanut and gelatin. As a child, I always looked forward to this event as I would be able to eat lots of special sweets that would not be always available during the rest of the year.

This picture was taken in early 2008. It was taken on El Moaz street in the El G'oriah area opposite to El Hussein, in Islamic Cairo.

The area is surrounded by an old mosque and Islamic architecture all around. The street is one of the oldest streets in Cairo. Once you pass by the street, the smell of spices, herbs and Middle Eastern incense go through your nose. Street sellers are all around trying to sell Oriental and Pharaonic souvenirs, rugs, and tablecloth.

Everyone was walking in the street and did not care about the surroundings except the tourist who was looking and wondering around.
